Workington AFC was first formed in 1884. In the early years Workington played random friendly matches against other clubs as no organised football leagues existed yet. In 1890 however Workington AFC became a founding member of the Cumberland Association League. The club moved from league to league during its early years. After just eight years the club moved to the Cumberland Senior League before moving again in 1901 to the Lancashire League. The Lancashire League lasted just two years however, and Workington AFC moved back to the Cumberland Senior League. After one season back in the Cumberland Senior League, Workington was admitted to the Lancashire Combination. Workington was soon on the move again though, joining the North Eastern League in 1910 for financial reasons. Workington AFC was unable to avoid financial difficulty though, as the club folded in 1911.

Workington AFC was reborn in 1921, immediately joining the North Eastern League. Workington achieved its greatest heights during the 1933/34 season as they reached the fourth round of the FA Cup tournament before eventually losing to Preston North End. Over the course of the past few decades Workington AFC has bounced up and down between the bottom divisions of the Football League and the top divisions of the Football Conference. Workington AFC has established itself in the 1990s and early 2000s as one of the top non-league football teams in the country.

When Workington AFC was initially formed in 1888, the club played at Lonsdale Park and has played all of its home matches at Borough Stadium which opened in 1937. The most wins Workington has ever achieved in a single season is 27 victories, a mark they reached twice. The first came during the 1931/32 season and Workington achieved it again during the 1998/99 season. Workington's worst season on record came during the 1976/77 campaign in which they won only four matches while losing 31. That was the last season in which Workington AFC was a member of the Football League.
